Largest U.S. Credit Unions by Asset Size in 2024 | MX (1)

We recognized how hard it was to obtain a current list of the biggest credit unions in the United States ranked by asset size, so we decided to put it here for easy access. No need to go digging through a database. Here it is.

These numbers are based on the latest March 2024 data from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). As in prior years, Navy Federal Credit Union, State Employees', and PenFed are the largest credit unions by asset size.

Top 10 American Credit Unions by Asset Size:

How Many Credit Unions are in the United States?

In March 2024, the NCUA listed 4,571 credit unions in the U.S., down from 4,759 in our 2023 list.

  • The average credit union in the top 250 by size has an average of $6 billion in assets. (Compared to an average of $84.8 billion for the average U.S. bank.)
  • The median assets under management is $3.5 billion among the top 250 credit unions by asset size. (Compared to $14.6 million for the median bank among the top 250.)

The average consumer has at least 5 to 7 financial accounts with different providers, making it nearly impossible for bank, credit union, and fintech leaders to measure primacy. MX helps companies do more with financial data that empowers consumers to reach their financial goals.
